A Fascinating Look At The Numbers Behind Social Media

Posted by

If you’re looking for some cool Social Media stats to bulk up a presentation or bring this new media channel to the attention of your superiors, look no further.

Yesterday, Erik Qualman (the author Socialnomics) released an updated version of his very popular YouTube video on Social Media stats titled: Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh).

Here are some of the more interesting Social Media stats:

  • Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.
  • 1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S. last year met via social media
  • Facebook added over 200 million users in less than a year
  • iPhone applications hit 1 billion in 9 months.
  • The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55-65 year-old females
  • Generation Y and Z consider email passé – some universities have stopped distributing email accounts
  • The #2 largest search engine in the world is YouTube
  • There are over 200,000,000 Blogs

  1. That is an amazing video… I’m still in awe at the stats. Awesome find Mitch – Thanks! Totally sharing this!

  2. Very interesting stats! It gave me an idea to start talking to folks looking to downsize to condos (re: The fastest growing segment). Wonder how many of them are in Toronto.

  3. Brilliant video. Some very interesting stats but I wonder, referring to the statistic about blogs: “There are over 200,000,000 Blogs” how many of them contain unique posts?
If we remove all the duplicated, regurgitated and cross-posted content, how much of the content is worthy of its place in the blogosphere and socialshpere – versus the posts that are there just to generate an adsense income.

  4. The first video was great and I’d love to see the updated version. But thanks to YouTube it’s not possible to watch it in Germany.
Any ideas how to get it anyway?

  5. Is anyone else just super motivated by this video? Not sure if it’s the combination of the music and the mind-blowing stats or what, but I’m ready to conquer the world! My favorite piece maybe the change from “word of mouth” to “WORLD of mouth”.
Thanks for sharing the kick in the pants, Mitch.

  6. Mitch- I remember the last video had Facebook at 4th, NOW it the 3rd largest Nation… We are in the middle of a “social media revolution!”
The paying customers will start winning again! Brian-

  7. Amazing video. I enjoyed the first one and it was mind blowing to see some of those numbers but now it’s taking it to another level. Definitely sharing this video. Thanks!

  8. Is is possible that 96% of all Millennial in the entire world have joined a social network? Or is this a smaller group of those with online access? U.S. only? just curious.

  9. As a blogger with unique posts, this is a question I’m always interested in. Ballpark figure? Maybe one third that. The other two thirds tend to die, although perhaps a better word would be “wither”. No one is interested in promo or ad blogs. You can’t make money from ads without traffic, or influence people if you’re the blogosphere equivalent of an infomercial. It’s a different kind of social network, with the post being more like a facebook status update, and the comments an ongoing conversation.

  10. What an amazing and fascinating video!
I love the quote from Erik Qualman stating that it’s not IF we do social media but how GOOD we do to leverage our business/ career/ life on a chosen social media plateforme.
Great finding and thanks for sharing!

  11. What a timely post, and video.
I polled my fellow project managers on LinkedIn and in person and the stats are shocking.
NO ONE is on social media. (Pretty much.)
    NO ONE cares.
They all think it will go away.
Which really shocks the hell out of me.
I am hoping this will be their wake-up call.
