SPOS #257 – The Extinction Of The Marketing Dinosaur With Avinash Kaushik

Posted by

Welcome to episode #257 of Six Pixels Of Separation – The Twist Image Podcast. When will the Marketing Dinosaurs die? When will those who hold the keys to marketing power truly start shifting their ways to not only embrace these new Digital Marketing channels, but to use them to unleash the most power form of Marketing that has ever been created? This was the question that Avinash Kaushik and I discussed this passed week while we were both speaking at The Art of Marketing event in Vancouver (which also featured Gary Vaynerchuk, Guy Kawasaki, Bill Taylor and Ron Tite). Avinash – the Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google and bestselling business book author of Web Analytics – An Hour A Day and Web Analytics 2.0 is a regular on this show (and a close friend). His perspectives are always fresh and direct. As usual, he holds no punches. Enjoy the conversation…

Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation – The Twist Image Podcast – Episode #257 – Host: Mitch Joel.

  1. Loved Avinash’s comment.. “If you throw peanuts, you get monkeys. ” How true, how true. I think that over the last 3-4 years the notion was that social media and customer engagement was cheap or (worse yet) free. Now, we can do some amazing things without spending a lot of money, but that only takes the campaign so far.
Corporations need to belly up to the bar and have some serious conversations about allocating appropriate budgets for not only media buy, metrics and execution, but training their key employees in how to think in new ways.

  2. Mitch: What a great podcast. Marketers who can’t think like a sales person who understands the real need(s) of the buyer are failing. The Thermos app is great example of doing this the right way. I need a vessel to fill and Thermos is thinking if they facilitate that process the result is a brand engagement that leads to a sale. Too many marketers and executives are focused on selling the vessel and that act does not address the consumer’s deeper underlying need. Another way to think about this is to see it from an internal perspective. A culture is defined by what it values. Customer or sales pipeline? BTW: Have you seen the Brita portable water bottle with a built in filter? That one-ups the need to find the perfect water fountain.

  3. Had the great thrill of hearing both you and Avinash in Vancouver last Thursday. Such an excellent podcast. Imagine the things we can do if corps start allocating REAL dollars to this space. I liked what Gary said too: Instead of spending all your money on advertising, why not hire a few people to connect with the consumer. Keeping it in house and understanding the need for improved customer experience is where I believe we’ll see the most success. Love love love learning from you both!
Theme word of the year “Connect”. 😉

  4. I love when you and Avinash get together, Mitch. I think it’s the closest I ever hear either of you get to full-on cursing. As someone who just got into the industry a few years ago, I see myself as someone with the web in my DNA. Hearing leaders like you and Avinash struggle with how to get people to see the light (or drink the koolaid, as you say) is inspiring to me.

  5. That was an extremely energetic episode, Mitch! Fast, tons of examples, funnier than I even expected. A great blend of education and humor.
By the way, what set-up / mic did you use to record it? Very warm voices.

  6. As dramatic as it sounds this podcast was the answer I’d be looking for. I felt I was banging my head against a brick wall or had some gigantic communication problem with clients and people in my network. It turned out that the web was not in their blood.
I am almost ashamed that I did not make this connection earlier. I now ask people about their experience of their business and the internet instead of asking them about social media and marketing.
I hate my bank less now too. The web is certainly not in their blood!
The energy, passion in this podcast make me “smile out loud” – thanks guys! 😉

  7. I normally have a hard time listening to podcasts, but I’ve replayed this one so many times I wondered if I would break the pixels on my screen. Fantastic conversation Mitch – thank you so much for your insights and exchanging ideas so freely with Avinash. Now if only I could get my superiors to have a conversation about this…
