The $20+ Million Dollar YouTube Kid And More On CHOM 97.7 FM

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

  • 2018 Holiday Gift Guide For The Dweeb, Nerd and/or Business-y Tech Loved One In Your Life from last week’s show..
  • Sure, you can buy some toys for your kids this holiday season. Or, you can turn them into a YouTuber/Influencer. 7 year old Ryan of Ryan ToysReview has close to 18 million followers clocking in at over 25 billion video views. Ryan was this year’s highest paid YouTube star. Forbes estimates that he made $22 million this year. Not a typo.
  • Creepy or perfect use of technology? I’ve seen facial recognition cameras at airports and places like that. I’ve even seen them in more private corporate offices. But, what about a Taylor Swift conference? According to Rolling Stone, that’s what Taylor’s team used at a May 18th show at the Rose Bowl to indentify her stalkers. “The camera was hidden inside a display kiosk at the event, and sent images of anyone who stopped to look at the display to a ‘command post’ in Nashville, where they were cross-referenced with other photos of the star’s known stalkers.” What are the concert-goers rights? How long is this data stored? How can it be used?
  • How would you like to be able to find a place to take a nap on every corner? This is the business of Recharge. The as-yet-to-launch platform will allow people to book shirt terms breaks in both hotels and apartments. Looks like the seedy motels on the other side of the tracks that charge by the hour may become disrupted!
  • App of the Week: Enjo.
