Episode #1035 of Thinking With Mitch Joel is now live.
In this conversation with MichaelAaron Flicker we get into a strange tension sitting at the center of modern marketing: marketers have never had more data, more tools, more precision, or more access to consumers… and yet trust, attention, and loyalty have rarely felt more fragile. That feels like the paradox of the moment. We can target better, test faster, personalize more, optimize endlessly and measure almost everything. Still, many brands feel less meaningful than they once did. The tools got sharper. The dashboards got smarter. The platforms got more powerful. But the human on the other side of the screen did not suddenly become less emotional, less irrational, less status-driven, or less influenced by story, scarcity, social proof, and context.
MichaelAaron has spent his career studying that space between what people say they want and what actually shapes their behavior.
He started his company at just fourteen years old, went on to build multiple businesses, runs Xenopsi, leads a venture capital firm, and hosts The Consumer Behavior Lab podcast. His book, Hacking The Human Mind – The Behavioral Science Secrets Behind 17 Of The World’s Best Brands, co-authored with Richard Shotton, looks at how great brands shape perception, build emotional resonance and influence decisions in ways consumers often do not consciously recognize. This conversation is about marketing, but it is also about power. We talk about the growing divide between performance marketing and brand building, why short-term metrics can quietly weaken long-term value, how Amazon and other platforms structure choice, and why the illusion of choice may be more powerful than choice itself. We also get into AI, recommendation systems and the possibility that marketing is shifting from persuasion into something much more intimate… and potentially more manipulative. What I appreciated most about this conversation is that MichaelAaron does not treat human behavior as something technology has replaced. If anything, his argument is the opposite. The technology keeps evolving, but the human operating system remains stubbornly familiar.
