A Playbook For Growth With Nicolas Darveau-Garneau – This Week’s Thinking With Mitch Joel Conversation

Episode #1043 of Thinking With Mitch Joel is now live.

This conversation with Nicolas Darveau-Garneau gets into one of the more dangerous assumptions in modern business: that efficiency is the same thing as growth. It is easy to understand why leaders fall into that trap. Efficiency is clean. It is measurable. It fits nicely into dashboards. It gives teams something to optimize. But companies do not become great because they simply get better at squeezing more output from the same system. Nicolas has spent his career helping organizations understand where technology creates real competitive advantage. He is a serial entrepreneur, former General Manager of Google in Canada, former Chief Evangelist at Google, and based in Silicon Valley, where he continues to advise executives on digital transformation, AI, marketing and growth strategy. He has worked with more than a thousand leaders, which gives him a very practical view of what organizations say they want… and what they actually reward.

His latest book, Be A Sequoia, Not A Bonsai – The Seven Growth Secrets of the World’s Most Successful Companies, challenges the obsession with short-term efficiency metrics like customer acquisition cost and return on ad spend.

Nicolas argues that the companies built to last are not bonsais, trimmed and optimized into something small and controlled. They are sequoias. They are built for profitable growth, long-term resilience, customer lifetime value, experimentation and the patience to create durable advantage. That idea becomes even more important in the AI era. If every company has access to increasingly powerful tools, the advantage may not go to the organization that automates the fastest. It may go to the organization that knows what it is optimizing for in the first place. Better metrics. Better incentives. Better experiments. Better ways to help people adapt. In this conversation, Nicolas and I talk about AI adoption, marketing KPIs, the role of evangelism inside companies, human change management, and why organizations need to prepare employees for AI-enabled careers rather than simply debating AI replacement. We also get into the democratization of expertise in fields like healthcare and law, the future of work, and the responsibility leaders have to balance profitability with human flourishing. Mostly, this is a conversation about growth that lasts. Not growth as a quarterly performance trick. Not growth as a spreadsheet exercise. Growth as the ability to keep learning, adapting and creating value when the tools, markets and rules keep changing.
