Developing A Vital Voice With Carmine Gallo – This Week’s Thinking With Mitch Joel Conversation

Episode #1039 of Thinking With Mitch Joel is now live.

This conversation with Carmine Gallo gets into something that feels more urgent with every passing week: communication may have always been one of the most valuable skills in business, but in an age of AI-generated content, algorithmic feeds, podcasts, newsletters, keynote stages, short-form video and endless digital noise, it may be becoming the skill that separates signal from sameness. Carmine has spent his career studying what makes ideas resonate. He is a communication coach, author and instructor in executive education at Harvard, and many people will know him from bestselling books like Talk Like TED, The Storyteller’s Secret, The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs and others. His latest project, Viral Voices – From TED Talks To TikTok, Persuasive Communication Skills For The Digital Age, is an audio-original experience that explores what great communicators can teach us about influence, storytelling and audience engagement in a media landscape that keeps changing shape.

What makes Carmine’s work especially relevant right now is that he does not treat communication as a soft skill.

He treats it as infrastructure. The platforms change. The formats change. The tools get faster, cheaper and more automated. But the human brain has not been redesigned by TikTok, ChatGPT or the latest content trend. We still respond to story, emotion, tension and meaning. We still remember ideas that make us feel something. We still follow the communicator who can turn information into understanding. In this conversation, Carmine and I talk about why storytelling remains one of humanity’s most powerful technologies, why attention is captured through movement and narrative, and why great communicators are made through deliberate practice rather than born fully formed. We also get into his AMP framework for improving communication: Ability, Message and Practice. Mostly, this is a conversation about what it means to have a vital voice in a world where everyone has access to powerful tools. AI can help us polish. It can help us draft. It can help us produce. But imagination, personal experience and genuine human insight may be harder to automate.
