Welcome to episode #204 of Six Pixels Of Separation – The Twist Image Podcast. Joseph Jaffe is widely regarded as one of the top Marketing Bloggers (Jaffe Juice) and Podcasters (both Jaffe Juice in audio and Jaffe Juice TV in video). He is the author of three excellent books (Life After The 30-Second Spot,Join The Conversation and the newly minted, Flip The Funnel). Along with that, he is currently one of the chiefs over at the Social Media Marketing agency, Powered. A long time friend (and one of the main inspirations behind the Six Pixels of Separation Blog and Podcast), we’ve decided to hold monthly conversations, debates and back-and-forths that will dive a little deeper into the Digital Marketing and Social Media landscape. This is our fifth conversation (or, as I like to affectionately call it, Across The Sound 5.20), and it focuses on Personal Branding. Does the term still hold meaning?   1. You guys did a great job with this episode. Your conversation really got me thinking about my blog and the direction that I need to take it.
    I’ve flip flopped so often about what my blog is about. Mainly, I’ve used it as a place to talk about digital marketing, social media, life in Nashville and to share videos and stories that I think are interesting.
    I go through periods where I slack on writing. I feel guilty about it too, to my subscribers and to myself.
    I am also the sole blogger at The Griffin Technology blog (if you’re interested http://blog.griffintechnology.com). I’m still creating content, but it often ends up there instead of on my own blog.
    I’ve taken to getting up earlier each day to try to hit my blog and write a post. Instead, this morning I’m writing a comment here.
    I’m sure you’re written this before, but I would be interested in hearing your daily routine Mitch and Joe. Also, YOU, lovely comment reader. What is your daily routine to be sure you stay on the blogging ball?

  2. You know I love Chris Brogan but… his emphasis on certain “this is the stuff you do” to kinda.. really do it.. is a real turn off for me.. I mean on in a way that I’m turned off from him or how he does it.. but just that it doesn’t feel right to me.. for what I would / should do.
    I don’t know how to say this without it sounding like the most arrogant thing possible.. but one of the ways I self differentiate is smarts and talent.. I end up with this kinda of contrarian view point.. you might not agree with it.. but if I put it out right it’ll at least be interesting.. but the trouble with contrarian view points is.. they are hard to work in sound bite form.. cause then it’s like you just make this statement.. and everyone thinks your crazy.. unless you follow the path which brings you to that position.. then they still think you’re crazy.. but in a better way then they did before. ( Noam Chomsky said something like this )
    Or like.. take pop music.. “this is what you need to do to get the hit single,” and you know, that’s awesome.. but like.. I don’t like most of your top 40 pop music.. I’d much rather go listen to Frank Zappa or something… or most of the exciting stuff didn’t break on the radio.. hiphop wasn’t getting the play back in the day, you know? Same with punk..
    As Joseph Campbell put it “the heretic is the life of the party.” Another words.. its almost a systemic thing.. that whatever is really the kick ass thing.. people don’t dig in a big way.. and once they get to digging it it’s already over.
    If you really think deeply.. about your own take on personal branding.. or at least the idea that.. .look we are all individuals.. and that’s a self differentiating thing.. if that were the core of everything.. should that not also be the core of how stuff is executed on.. and thus.. one shouldn’t necessarily dogmatically follow the best practices of how you get over?
    Or how about this.. we are talking about creative content, are we not? It’s like R&D, you don’t manage it the same way you do other things.. not if you want real innovation..
    The game of the system is an effect of the modern ecosystem.. I mean I have always hated that search engines search via text.. not audio, not video, not computer graphics, not flash animations, just text. I understand its technologically simpler for it to work this way.. but..
    So look, Google is imposing certain values on everything. Are they your values? Do you think that if we all cultivate that set of values we’ll find our self in a better world then if we cultivated a different set of values?
    The thing is.. if you really look around.. seems like everyone is saying the same freaking things.. over and over again.. and the level of deviation from that norm.. it’s like ok.. I love your content in part cause its like.. I think higher quality.. and not just a parrot thing.. but I also don’t feel like you’re a part of a sub movement inside of social media that’s working towards this other thing.. in the same way that say.. the Beat movement was.. or punk rock..
    If the social media William Burroughs came up to you, what would you say?
    I always thought social media would only truly get interesting once we had that punk rock kinda movement going.. in terms of how people are using it.. thinking about it.. executing on it.. but I think the group think kinda keeps things a little boring.
    I don’t know what I’m driving at.. only that I think we live in a world of infinite possibility… and it feels like the whole world doesn’t want to think about more then 25 options of that total.. and nobody even knows there’s more then 25 options in front of us right now..
    It’s not just that the digital channels are in there early days, its also how we think about them.
    Ok, I’ll stop ranting…
