The Ugly Side of Disruptive Startups And More On CHOM 97.7 FM

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

  • There was an article in The Atlantic titled, The Millennial Urban Lifestyle Is About to Get More Expensive. Here’s a quote from the story: “If you wake up on a Casper mattress, work out with a Peloton before breakfast, Uber to your desk at a WeWork, order DoorDash for lunch, take a Lyft home, and get dinner through Postmates, you’ve interacted with seven companies that will collectively lose nearly $14 billion this year. If you use Lime scooters to bop around the city, download Wag to walk your dog, and sign up for Blue Apron to make a meal, that’s three more brands that have never recorded a dime in earnings, or have seen their valuations fall by more than 50 percent.” So, great and easy tools for consumers, yes. Strong and powerful businesses? Maybe not so much.
  • Speaking of which, Uber now claims that it has “zero” drivers. From an article in the Washington Post: “Uber raised eyebrows last month when its chief lawyer asserted that ‘drivers’ work is outside the usual course of Uber’s business’ in a call laying out the company’s resistance to a California bill that would alter the employment status of many ‘gig’ workers. It is a legal strategy the Silicon Valley company has been honing for years that helps it avoid responsibility for the actions of its drivers.” Again, what business are these people in?
  • Apple has new AirPods coming out? That’s what the rumor mill is spinning. These AirPod Pro ones are said to have a new in-ear, metal design and include noise cancellation. The price could be around $250 USD. Expensive… but if the noise cancelling is any good, this could be a huge product for Apple.
