Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #467

Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?

My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”

Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:

  • The Inescapable Town Square – The New Atlantis. “ I gave a talk this week to a group of information and records managers. Some of it was informed by the work of Walter Ong, who wrote thoughtfully on the ways in which we share information. Initially, everything was oral—imagine never being able to look anything up!—but we progressed through writing, broadcast media, and today, the online conversation. As L. M. Sacasas points out, ‘social media is a throwback, combining the worst of prior eras of communication.'” (Alistair for Hugh).
  • Tech & Society with Mark Zuckerberg – Breaker. “Like them or hate them, Facebook is the biggest virtual nation on the planet. And it’s commendable that founder Mark Zuckerberg is talking – one on one – with some of the world’s foremost thinkers on society, technology, and ethics. A promising trend I’ll be listening to in the coming weeks as he adds interviews.” (Alistair for Mitch).
  • Uber Data Reveals Motoring Slower Than Walking In Many Cities – Forbes. “More data about the ways in which Uber is kinda broken.” (Hugh for Alistair).
  • Sign In With Apple Is A Big Win For Data Privacy – Cantina. “I’m not sure whether Apple should be trusted with our privacy, but I know that Google and Facebook should not. So. I’m happy to see that Apple is moving hard to make privacy a core part of their offering.” (Hugh for Mitch).
  • I Go To Conferenceland – The Ad Contrarian. “We need to listen more to our elders. Especially the ones who have succeeded and been through the ringer for decades. This is one of those pieces. I feel these sentiments of this piece every single day ,when I go to an event (especially marketing conferences). It’s a function of youth and inexperience more than anything else. Young speakers (with little to know experience) giving opinions based on what they see versus what they’ve done (and what works). This made me laugh and cry all at the same time.” (Mitch for Alistair).
  • Research Confirms That No One Is Really Thinking About You – Deb Knobelman – The Ascent – Medium. “There is nothing that distorts reality more than social media. People think that I travel all of the time, but the truth is that I only post stuff when I’m on the road (I guess). So, once we get nice things (likes, comments, followers), it becomes this beast that we need to feed. We rarely stop, take a look around and realize that everyone is so self-involved that they have little-to-no-time to think about anyone. That’s the good news. Nobody is thinking about you. Take a read…” (Mitch for Hugh).

Feel free to share these links and add your picks on TwitterFacebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.
