Dead Rock Stars On Tour And More On CHOM 97.7 FM

Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly on i Heart Radio, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away about what’s going on in the digital world. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry DiMonte morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.

This week we discussed:

  • How do you feel about this use of tech? Amy Winehouse will go on tour next year. True, she passed away in 2011, but this is something different. Like Ronnie James Dio (who had this treatment done to him last year), Amy Winehouse will have a hologram/virtual reality experience that will tour the world in 2019. Roy Orbison, Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur have done this (but not at scale/on tour). So, would you pay to see a hologram concert “live”?
  • When Fortnite first came on to the scene, I mentioned it as the App of the Week (back in April). That might have been an understatement. Fortnite has become a global video game sensation. Epic Games (the creators of Fortnite) has not had a hit like this for 20 years (they’re the company behind Unreal). This week, the company announced a $1.25 billion round of financing. This gives the company a valuation of $15 billion. Unreal, indeed.
  • We talked about Elon Musk‘s idea of The Boring Company when he first announced it over a year ago. Well, his super-fast Los Angeles underground loop is almost ready to show off its first tunnel under the city to ease up on traffic. This is not the hyperloop idea (fast, pressurized tubes)… it’s a platform that could carry a vehicle at speeds up to 250 km per hour! Leave it to the Tesla and SpaceX innovator to bring this to life. December 10th seems to be the date. Incredible.
  • App of the Week: Apple iOS – Screen Time.
