Data Inspired With Sebastian Wernicke – This Week’s Thinking With Mitch Joel Conversation

Episode #1051 of Thinking With Mitch Joel is now live.

This conversation with Dr. Sebastian Wernicke gets into one of the great traps of modern business: believing that more data automatically creates better decisions. It is a comforting idea. Gather more information. Build better dashboards. Add more analytics. Layer in AI. Then assume the truth will somehow become obvious. Sebastian makes a very different case. The problem is rarely that organizations do not have enough data. The problem is that people are very good at using data to confirm what they already believe. Sebastian has built his career at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, economics and decision-making. He leads the Data Science and AI team at Oxera, one of Europe’s leading economics consultancies, and has become widely recognized for making complex ideas about data accessible, practical and deeply human. Many people first encountered him through his memorable TED Talk, which used data to cleverly satirize TED Talks themselves. But his work has always been focused on a much bigger question: how can organizations use data to challenge assumptions instead of simply reinforcing them?

His new book, Data Inspired – Building An Organizational Culture Of Inquiry For Lasting Transformation, argues that businesses have become too focused on being data-driven and not focused enough on becoming data-inspired.

That distinction matters. Being data-driven can still leave an organization trapped inside its existing assumptions, optimizing what already exists. Being data-inspired means using evidence to ask better questions, surface uncertainty, rethink direction and create the conditions for transformation. In this conversation, we talk about confirmation bias, the limits of data-driven decision-making, the promises and disappointments of big data, and why AI does not magically solve the cultural problems that prevent organizations from changing their minds. We also get into generative AI, synthetic data, AI agents, trust in machine learning and the complicated balance between autonomy and control. Mostly, this is a conversation about curiosity as a leadership discipline. Data can help organizations see more clearly, but only if leaders design environments where people are willing to be surprised, challenged and proven wrong. The organizations that thrive in the AI era may not be the ones with the most data. They may be the ones with the courage to build cultures of inquiry instead of cultures of certainty.
