Every Monday morning at 7:10 am, I am a guest contributor on CHOM 97.7 FM radio broadcasting out of Montreal (home base). It’s not a long segment – about 5 to 10 minutes every week – about everything that is happening in the world of technology and digital media. The good folks at CHOM 97.7 FM are posting these segments weekly to SoundCloud, if you’re interested in hearing more of me blathering away. I’m really excited about this opportunity, because this is the radio station that I grew up on listening to, and it really is a fun treat to be invited to the Mornings Rock with Terry and Heather B. morning show. The segment is called, CTRL ALT Delete with Mitch Joel.
This week we discussed:
- Do you know what Twitch is? Twitch is a network of online videos channels that is widely popular as the place that people go to watch other people play video games. Think that’s silly? Consider this: Amazon acquired Twitch for about $1 billion back in the summer of 2014. This latest announcement might be a peek into why Amazon put such a high price on this deal. Twitch is about to launch a new hub, where users can watch artists as they work. It’s called Twitch Creative. It will feature everything from painters and sculptors to musicians who will be live-streaming their creative process. To launch this new network, Twitch will be live streaming all 403 episodes of The Joy of Painting. Remember that series? The one featuring Bob Ross (yes, that deep voice and frizzy haired painter).
- Who is really following Montreal Mayor, Denis Coderre on Twitter? Last week, the Montreal Gazette had a large feature on this that received global attention. Apparently, our mayor has close to 220,000 followers, but nearly two-thirds of those are “fake.” Does that mean that @DenisCoderre is a fraud? Does that mean that he (or someone on his team) has bought the followers to create a semblance of an audience? My answer might surprise you.
- App of the week: Bitmoji.
