How To Avoid Bad Television

Posted by

One of the best (and easiest) ways to avoid bad television, is to watch good television online.

Yes, there is plenty of good television. And – just like the Internet – you have dig around and scratch beneath the surface to find the real gems. One of the best (in terms of learning about business, community and how it all connects) is Charlie Rose. Without question, Rose not only has some of the best guests out there, but he’s also one of the most amazing conversationalists in the world.

It used to be shareable, but it’s not anymore.

I’m not sure who took this decision over at Bloomberg (the owners of The Charlie Rose Show), but all of his interviews used to available via Google Video – making them easy to share, embed, link to, etc…, but as of recently, it’s all stuck on his website (which sucks if you don’t have a PVR/DVR/Tivo) with no direct links to specific shows/interviews and no ability to embed the video over on this Blog (sorry).

It’s a little bit more work, but it’s worth it.

Just this week, Rose had some fascinating conversations with the like of Warren Buffet, Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics authors Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt and – my personal fave – Malcolm Gladwell who discusses his latest book (a collection of his essays for The New Yorker), What The Dog Saw.

Here’s how to watch these video interview segments:

  1. Go to his website: Charlie Rose.
  2. There are two search engine boxes. Choose the second one titled, "Search Videos".
  3. Enter the name of the guest you which to watch (listed above).
  4. Enjoy.

  1. Thanks so much for posting this! On Bloomberg radio, I had heard that Malcolm Gladwell would be on Charlie Rose but I missed it. I was hoping there was a way to find it online somewhere. Glad to be able to catch up on all the conversations you listed here. And, not that it matters, but I wasn’t aware that Bloomberg owned the Charlie Rose show, no wonder Bloomberg was able to arrange broadcasts of the CR show on their radio station. Interesting. Good stuff! (BTW, I use RealPlayer Downloader to download from the web to my PC & iPod Touch.)

  2. Thanks for this. However I was really surprised and disappointed to see what guests he hasn’t yet interviewed. Seth Godin isn’t there. Okay maybe he’s a bit too gimmicky for Charlie Rose, although I love to hear him speak. But Clay Shirky?? I was also really hoping to see Cory Doctorow. At least Lawrence Lessig and Chris Anderson are there, and yes, Malcolm Gladwell. But Howard Rheingold, Yochai Benkler and Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi aren’t on his lineup.
I’d be interested to hear what guests other people have found –or not found– on Charlie Rose’s list.

  3. Chris Brogan isn’t there. Neither are the Heath brothers (Made to Stick). I did take a look at his business lineup –lots of CEO’s, lots of traditional business leaders. But very few authors about the new directions of business and marketing.

  4. Thanks Mitch for the introduction to Charlie Rose’s website. I love Malcom Gladwell’s book “the Outliers. It gave me a better understanding of myself and others by seeing how family upbringing shapes you. So the Rose – Gladwell video interview was icing on the cake.
    Regards, Carl Hunt
