Become Digitally Literate

Posted by

A better world is a place where more and more people are digitally literate.

People often ask me who I turn to for the most forward-thinking perspectives on new media and new thinking. One of my main sources of inspiration for new thinking is Douglas Rushkoff. Rushkoff’s bio is intense. His latest book, Program or be Programmed, is a rich read. Here he is speaking at Google. Watch this for an hour… but keep a notebook handy…

  1. Isn’t it funny that, even after he commented that the point of a speaker is to have a speaker, not slides. They still keep filming those stupid slides while the guys is so passionate about what he is saying that he is the show.
It’s quite a coincidence, I am halfway through your book and I wrote a little article earlier today about “You are media” creating a bias in information (http://bit.ly/kKhbOC). Now following a tweet I ended up here watching for an hour about bias and I am still curious for a couple more.

  2. For a guy so focused on digital literacy and marketing communication, and his stuff is great, he should take a community college speech class. Enough “uhm”s already.

  3. I agree with the comment on the umh’s, many people know their stuff and are not meant to deliver the product. I find it easier to listen to him than watch. At Video Pitch we do a 30-60 second video take. We then know how much time they need to practice their presentation.
The same goes for presentations practice, practice and practice some more.
I will go buy his book because Mitch Joel advises me it is worth my time.
    Thanks

  4. I totally agree with many of his statement. We are losing the skill of language and communication to each other as human beings. We are lossing the ability to express ourself and communicate our real self as human beings.

  5. I read his book “Program or be Programmed” and found it filled with many good and important ideas to think about. I don’t mind his umms s much. I like the way he speaks. He is certainly passionate about what he speaks about and that carries a lot of weight with me.

  6. I almost never create remarks, but I browsed some of the responses here Become Digitally Literate | Six Pixels of Separation – Marketing and Communications Insights –
By Mitch Joel at Twist Image. I do have 2 questions for you if it’s allright.
Could it be only me or do some of the remarks appear as if
they are written by brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are writing at other sites, I would
like to keep up with everything new you have to post.
Would you list of all of all your social pages like your Facebook page,
    twitter feed, or linkedin profile?
