American Cancer Society – Second Life Relay For Life

Read this from the American Cancer Society website:
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon ran around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. Today Relay For Life is held in more than 4,400 communities in the United States and in 21 countries across the globe. To date, Relay For Life has raised more than $1.5 billion to help the Society accelerate the progress against cancer by saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight back against this disease.
Relay For Life returns to Second Life for a second year of Relay. This year we are developing technology for virtual pledge cards, sponsorships, teams and other features. We are working to capture Second Life’s near-infinite potential for creativity and collaboration. This adventurous new virtual setting will allow people to participate in Relay regardless of their geographic distances or physical limitations.”
I just love this.
Can you think of a simpler way to raise several thousand dollars where most of the money raised will go to the cause because there are no printing costs, rentals, staffing, administration, etc…?
In a month where Second Life is hearing from many detractors, I love seeing progressive organizations overcome the doubt by organizing people, raising money for a good cause and making a difference in our world (at a time when we need as much help as possible).
To the people who can’t seem to see the light of Second Life, keep at it – others are finding new, unique and creative opportunities.
The Second Life Relay for Life is taking place July 22nd – 23rd.

You can count on my support – both in donation, in participation and in Second Life.
